Advice #39

Skin: how can you help it heal better?

It takes time for the skin to ‘reconstitute itself’ but sometimes, without really knowing why, scars remain visible even after several years.

In truth, it all depends on the general condition of your skin, your health, your age, your lifestyle and the way in which you have dealt with everyday traumas (particularly if the wound was not treated well enough to begin with).

On skin that has already been damaged or poorly cared for, even superficial wounds end up leaving marks.

Understanding the healing process, treating the injury and anticipating with targeted care can help you heal better. And nothing is inexorable: even on an older scar that is struggling to fade, it is always possible to take action.

THE MAGIC MECHANISM OF HEALING

Healing is a natural phenomenon that can be slowed down in the case of coagulation disorders, anaemia, diabetes or an unhealthy lifestyle (smoking, poor diet, irregular skin cleansing, etc.). It is also more complicated with advancing age (collagen production decreases). Healing takes place in several phases, allowing the fibrous tissue to regenerate.

In the first phase, platelets play their role in forming a clot to prevent blood leakage, while pro-inflammatory cells destroy germs and intruders to prevent infection. An inflammatory reaction occurs, the area is red and heated (a sensation of diffuse heat and pain can be felt).

In a second phase, the budding phase (after about a week), a reconstruction process takes place and the wound closes with the development of new tissue. Underneath the scab (you don't touch it until it falls off by itself!), vessels, fibres (collagen, elastin) and cells proliferate.

Over the following months, the skin slowly continues to rebuild itself. But it takes time - up to a year or more - for the final scar to set in, and even longer before it completely disappears (if everything has been done properly).

It's all a bit magical, but with the right care and practices, we can help the body at every stage of the healing process...

Our advices

1

2

THE FIRST THOUGHT

Once the risk of superinfection has been ruled out (if in doubt, or in the event of a serious injury, it is obviously advisable to consult a doctor), here are the steps you can take :

- For a superficial wound, clean the injured skin with soapy water and
dry it well (always without rubbing). Use a disinfectant spray if necessary.

When the skin is completely dry, you can apply a dressing (remember to renew it regularly).

At all stages of healing, it is advisable to protect the skin from the sun
(with a mineral cream or by wearing clothing over the area concerned), as the epidermis is more sensitive and exposure to the sun could pigment the skin (the scar would then become darker, preventing the tissues from healing properly).

Eating foods rich in zinc and vitamins A, C and E could also have a positive impact on healing, so don't neglect to eat well.

3

HOW CAN I REDUCE AN OLDER SCAR?

Regular treatment of an old scar will make it softer and less visible. However, avoid overly aggressive scrubs (which are not really recommended for damaged skin).

Always clean the area concerned before applying your skin care product. Simply massage Relax Isotonic into the scar, making sure the cream is thoroughly absorbed.

The skin is deeply moisturised and regains its elasticity, and the massage will naturally stimulate cell renewal.

It takes time, but you have to be persistent, because regularity really is everything!

4

IN ALL CASES: MASSAGE AND MOISTURISE!

If the scar is still inflamed, avoid touching it.
Otherwise, always make sure you use your skin care products on impeccably cleansed skin.

To help healing and relax the tissues, use a treatment such as Relax Isotonic.

Your treatment is truly tolerated by all skin types. Thanks to its high moisturising and disinfectant properties, it is perfect for all the other stages of healing.

Applied with very gentle massages (two or three times a day), it penetrates instantly: the skin is softer, more supple and hydrated from the inside out, so it heals better.

All you have to do now is relax.
